LANGUAGES AND TRAVELS

Languages are so often associated to travels.  You need to communicate a lot during your travels, therefore languages are important.  They are the base of all communication. And they are such a powerful tool. The more languages you can speak, the more you can communicate with a wide international range of multicultural people.

As everyone is unique and his own language, speaking different languages can certainly help to be understood with a great range of people from all over the world.

What is your idea of travelling?

https://www.virtuoso.com/travel/articles/10-powerful-reasons-why-people-love-to-travel Why do people leave their homes and voyage all over the globe? The reasons why people love to travel are varied, and very personal.

For me travelling is more a leisure, a passion and an escape to daily life with all your worries, work…I love exploring new places. It means also discovering new cultures if you go abroad. It is the perfect time to do something different and exciting, especially something you can’t do at home, like scuba diving, boat sailing… Just having fun, relax, and you’ll come back home with the best memories of your adventures, thanks of the photos, videos you could take also.

For me, it is also a great opportunity to make new friends – either fellow travelers or locals. You will have the opportunity to get to know them and visit them also. One day, in Santorini with my partner, I had the occasion to meet solo travellers, 1 chinese boy and 1 Swiss girl. We were at a restaurant enjoying our evening and I decided to go to talk to them and after a while they were invited to our table and we ended up the lovely evening together. We kept contact, and we might see each other again, who knows?

Life is full of surprises. You never know what , who you can meet across your road during your trips. Relax, take the time to appreciate all the varied activities, places , people you discover while travelling . You be richer at the end of your travels: rich of memories, new experiences, new friends…

There’s always a reason to take a trip. It could be a wedding …. It’s also a good way to gather family and friends. I had the opportunity to meet special international friends during my social International gatherings within my Lingo Mix group. In 2016, I met a great couple of Brazilian friends who came here to UK for 1 year, and I had the best memories with them for 1 year, exploring UK but France also, where I took them to Chamonix in France where they skied for the first time. It was a special moment . We are still in touch and we are hoping to meet each other again when possible. They become one of my best friends.

Why people love to travel? How do you like travelling?

Please share your thoughts!

They are all different processes, with different learning methods, different purposes. There is no set or standard rule regarding which language learning methods are better, language classes or private language lessons. For some students, a private lesson may be better, and for other students a group setting may work. It also depends on what is being taught, what the students are expected to do, and if the student actually wants to learn: https://www.rypeapp.com/blog/language-classes-or-language-lessons/

PRIVATE TUITION

Private tuition is more for people motivated to learn, improve their language with a more customized language learning method. The teacher can adapt the courses for each student. In language classes you have a method for everyone , and you need to stick with it. Some people need / prefer personalization of their courses, as they have their preferred learning method ( visual, hearing, music, conversation…)They need a customized learning approach to improve the language faster, better.

It is good sometimes to try both: a few clients who took language classes first can decide afterwards to switch to a private tuition for different reasons.

Whatever the option you choose, learning a language can be a FUN experience and be very useful ( travel, job…) So let’s learn languages .

Feel free to visit my page and my team of language teachers for a fun and friendly language learning experience – and for any language queries, ask me: marieitmm@gmail.com

WORDS IN YOUR LANGUAGE

How many words in your language?

Words are the main part of your language. A word is by definition a single distinct meaningful element of speech or writing, used with others (or sometimes alone) to form a sentence and typically shown with a space on either side when written or printed.

Language is the primary tool for expression and communication, can help us better understand ourselves, why we behave the way we do. Language is so powerful: words shape people and their culture.

If we want to talk about how many words there are in English, there are three key numbers to remember: more than a million total words, about 170,000 words in current use, and 20,000-30,000 words used by each individual person. _ 2020

In total, 150 words will be added to the existing 60,000 words in the new 2020 version of the French dictionary Larousse.

In this article : https://phys.org/news/2019-11-words-language.html , it reminds us that “Languages evolve naturally as a result of the migration of people, which in turn results in languages getting into contact with each other. along with migration, new environments and technology also influence how language evolves. The Dictionnaire des francophones (French speakers’ dictionary)

25th March 2021.

https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/official-french-dictionary-now-includes-worldwide-french-usage/5824848.html When I read this web article it reminded me the new French words emerged as the Covid-19 crisis: “confinement”… It is interesting how a language can evolve.

The Dictionnaire des francophones is one of the emblematic measures of the French presidential plan for the French language and multilingualism unveiled in 2018. It is presented as part of French Language and Francophonie Week.

https://www.institutfrancais.com/en/close-up/launch-of-the-dictionnaire-des-francophones

A new online dictionary, called the French speakers’ dictionary, includes new French words from around the world. It was released on March 18, 2020. French President Emmanuel Macron proposed the idea of the dictionary in 2018. It now contains about 600,000 terms.

Roselyne Bachelot is the French Culture Minister. She said the dictionary is not just for France’s 67 million citizens, but for the 300 million French speakers worldwide. The aim, supporters say, is to recognize the way language changes. Words and expressions included in the dictionary come from over 50 countries – even from the United States. Some people in the southern U.S. state of Louisiana speak French.

People can see the dictionary on a website or with an app. Users can also send in new words they think should be included. Official dictionaries produced by the French Academy in Paris were first published hundreds of years ago and are regularly updated.

Introducing the project in 2018, Macron said France needed to understand that it did “not carry the destiny of the French language on its own.” He added that France is “a country among others” that learns, speaks and writes in French. Other French dictionaries are changing, too. But this is the first time a dictionary supported by the French government has included words that are not often used in France.

France

LYON 3rd major town of France

https://worldinsidemypocket.co.uk/2019/11/26/things-to-do-in-lyon-france/

Top 10 largest cities of France by population

Lyon is the third-largest city and second-largest urban area of France. It is located at the confluence of the rivers Rhône and Saône, about 470 km (292 mi) south-east of Paris, 320 km (199 mi) north of Marseille and 56 km (35 mi) northeast of Saint-Étienne. Inhabitants of the city are called Lyonnais.

I love this town, personally much better than the capital. Lyon is worth visiting and you may fall in love with this fascinating town.

Capital of French gastronomy, with lots to do and see, with its charming old town and modern town, captivating architecture and buildings, LYON has so much to offer.

Go and visit this beautiful town of Lyon. It is one of my favourite towns of France.

Avignon, a major historic city of the south of France

In Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of France.
The city of Avignon played an important role in the 14th century. Though nowadays, it’s mostly known for its bridge, the Pont d’Avignon, the city was once a residence for pontiffs who made their home at the Palace of the Popes.

Besides its historic significance, Avignon has much to offer

Juggling with languages

And it is indeed amazing to be able to support international people. I am used to French, and Italian calls.

Actually last week calling a French company it was so nice to hear her strong  South accent, I chatted a bit with the person… It was like a bit of sunshine next to me

Names of school years

How interesting the different education systems  work in the countries

Taking just an exemple of
Names of school years=

In the French educational system, names of school years “count down”, whereas in the British and US systems, they generally “count up”.

This gives the following rough equivalents. Note that formally, the full name of French school years is classe de sixième (année) etc, but class de and année is usually omitted in everyday speech.

French year
UK equivalent

La sixième
Year 7

La cinquième
Year 8

La quatrième
Year 9

La troisième
Year 10

La seconde
Year 11

La première
Year 12

La terminale
Year 13

Any other differences in the education systems you want to add?
